I spoke to a friend today who was cast in On the Town at the Gateway Playhouse, and it brought back memories of when I did On the Town at the Gateway Playhouse... over ten years ago. It's where I earned my Equity card! If you ever get the chance to work at the Gateway, do it. It's so much fun. And conveniently close to the City!
I've seen On the Town a lot recently on the breakdowns since it closed on Broadway. It's a terrific show that isn't done as often as many other classics of its era, at least within the high school/community theatre realm. So unless you caught the latest revival or live close to an excellent regional theatre, you may not be familiar with it. Basically, there are three couples with distinct personalities, and a singing/dancing ensemble. Here are audition suggestions for each.
Kansas City from Oklahoma
Shipoopi from The Music Man
You've Got Possibilities from Superman
One Hundred Easy Ways from Wonderful Town
Gorgeous from Apple Tree
The Girl in 14G by Tesori/Scanlon
My Defenses Are Down from Annie Get Your Gun
Leaning on a Lampost from Me and My Girl
Do I Love You Because You're Beautiful from Cinderella
All Through the Night from Anything Goes
A Quiet Thing from Flora, the Red Menace
Show Off from Drowsy Chaperone
I used to think that every person pursuing a musical theatre career should be required to swing. Like a theatrical version of compulsory military duty.

This is a tough category for so many of us, yet absolutely necessary to be competitive today.
